Phil Bryant Suggests Criminals Can Go to Soviet Union to Get Banned High-Capacity Weapons

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant is a little dazed and confused about the fate of the Soviet Union.
In a remarkable show of geographical and historical ignorance, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant countered President Obama's proposal to ban high-capacity magazines by suggesting that criminals could simply buy the banned weapons from either Brazil or the phantom of the Soviet Union.

"If they want a 30-round clip, they're going to get it out of Brazil or the Soviet Union," Bryant said according to the Huffington Post. "It's going to go on the black market. Self-protecting citizens wouldn't have that right, but criminals will."

Phil, anyone who lives in your state is fully aware that you are hellbent on the idea that your citizens should live like it's 1950 (or 1850 by some considerations). However, the current year is in fact 2013, and the Soviet Union has not existed since 1991. No word yet on where criminals might go to acquire a time machine.

Another day, another embarrassment from Phil Bryant for the people of Mississippi. It's quite amazing that Bryant was even so capable of topping his own stupidity just hours after he sent out a letter urging the state legislature to bypass the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution and to "make any unconstitutional order by the President illegal to enforce in Mississippi by state or local law enforcement." Unconstitutional in this particular instance means "anything Phil doesn't like."

Bryant says he opposes bans on high-capacity magazines because, "When it's for self protection, you need as much firepower as needed to protect your family."

Well, thanks for clearing that up for us, Phil.

  1. "If they want a 30-round clip, they're going to get it out of Brazil or the Soviet Union," Bryant said...'.

He is making the point that when a criminal decides he/she wants to acquire a 30-round clip, he/she will be successful. However, when a law abiding citizen needs to defend themselves against these thugs, a single shot or smaller clip leaves them utterly defenseless. The perp simply waits until they hear that deafening 'click' of an empty clip, at which time they win and you lose.

    1. I am making the point that the Soviet Union hasn't existed in more than two decades.

    2. It would be equally disingenuous of others to paint Joe Biden in a negative way in light of his most recent slip: Speaking at the Iowa State Society inauguration ball, the Vice President said, “I’m proud to be President of the United States”. We are all aware that he misspoke in the same way Governor Bryant did, and reasonable people make allowances for such things. I know what Mr. Biden meant to say, so I listen to what he meant, not what he actually said, and I do the same for the Governor. When people viciously attack those who mindlessly misspeak (meaning that the people who make these blunders are unaware of their mindless slips), as these two men did, they are the epitome of one who quibbles about everything. We all speak mindlessly at times. The difference with yours and my verbal slips is that the quibblers of the world are not waiting in the wings to attack us when we do, as our audience is quite small in comparison. I would hope people would be more forgiving, less vicious, look past the slips, and find the good sense to listen to what people mean, not what they mistakenly said. There are much more important things to be doing rather than quibbling over semantics.

    3. Oh...and here is yet another one from Biden: Biden: “We need more gun laws because we don’t have time to enforce the ones we have.”

Now, that is classic! Will I write an article attacking him on it? No...but I will point out the obvious hypocrisy exhibited in your article. I hope you understand that this works both ways, and yet serves to accomplish very little to nothing at all. We can do better and be better people for it.

  2. Do you really believe Governor Bryant is not aware of that fact? To say that he is not aware of this is being disingenuous.

To allow the government to regulate things that are outside the scope of their Constitutional power is dangerous to all of our liberties. Unconstitutional means anything that is a violation of the original intent of our Constitution. The Constitution can only be violated by the government, not by the people. When the government acts without authority from the Constitution (ultra vires), and when the government violates the rights of the people, it has violated the Constitution. Again, that is all that matters here. Governor Bryant is concerned for the freedoms of both you and I. If you (or anyone) doesn't wish to own a gun, don't. No one will force you to own a gun. If I wish to own and carry a gun, I will. No one will force me to give up that right, nor should they try.
