Paper Moon Winery in Vermilion is a year-round wine destination
Paper Moon Vineyards and Winery, 2008 State Road in Vermilion, is open year-round producing homemade wine and offering a place for entertainment.
Winemaker Adam Cawrse said he and his parents, Dick and Sheryl Cawrse, opened the winery 15 years ago due to a family love for wine and wine-making, not realizing how much work goes into owning and operating a commercial winery.
“We thought it would be a fun challenge to take our home wine-making into a commercial level,” Cawrse said. “There’s many aspects of running a winery beside making wine and sipping on it, but it’s been rewarding and one thing we really enjoy.”
The winery’s busiest wine production season starts in October after the grapes ripen and tanks fill up, according to Cawrse.
Bottling can start as early as the new year and into the spring and summer, depending on the specific wine’s age, he said.
“We try to get a lot of that wrapped up so that when summertime hits, we can focus more on our busyness and having customers here,” Cawrse said.
The winery makes an array of wines, incorporating flavors and tastes, he said.
In the restaurant and dining area, guests can find Ohio craft beers and other local products, as well as Paper Moon’s homemade cider pressed from locally-grown apples.
“I think when people come in, they enjoy having many options and they can try through sampling and hone in on one that they really enjoy,” Cawrse said.
Among the most popular wines are the harvest blend, which is a sweet red blend, and the blackberry sangria, defined as “summer in a bottle,” he said.
On the opposite end the spectrum is dry, un-oaked chardonnay and a semi-sweet zinfandel, Cawrse said.
“We offer everything from dry to sweet, white to red, and hopefully, we find something that is going to satisfy everyone’s palette,” he said. “We try to offer a wide variety of wines.”
Paper Moon has an outdoor lawn that is home to many events during warm weather months, according to Cawrse.
Live bands are a recurring entertainment option, due to the family’s love for music, he said.
The name “Paper Moon” was even inspired by the popular song, “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” Cawrse said.
“Music is kind of our biggest thing that we enjoy sharing with people when they come to relax and recharge here,” he said. “We really enjoy music as a family.”
Paper Moon also is the site of different private events, such as Whet Your Palette painting parties, and other occasions like bridal and baby showers, Cawrse said.
The winery even plans to host an event for the April 8 solar eclipse.
“I think it’s neat to see local businesses work together in that way to help each other,” Cawrse said. “The same for bands, just to give them venues where they can play.”
